Hexed Haven - Early Preview

Hexed Haven is a 3D turn-based tactics game inspired by the classic Hoplite. My goal is to expand on the core mechanics of Hoplite by bringing these ideas into a rich 3D world filled with a variety of abilities, enemies, locations, and the addition of challenging boss battles.

Current Status

This is a very early preview of a work in progress, primarily intended to share with friends, colleagues, and those interested in following the development process. Please expect some rough edges—many features are still in development, and the game is far from polished. This version is more of a proof of concept, and I greatly appreciate any constructive feedback you might have, whether positive or negative.

About the Developer

I'm a solo developer working on Hexed Haven. This project is a labor of love, and I’m excited to share its progress with you.

Controls

  • Mouse: Left-click to select hexes.
  • WASD: Select hexes.
  • Q/E: Rotate the camera left/right.
  • R/F: Tilt the camera up/down.
  • Backspace: Reset the cursor.
  • Shift: View a selected enemy’s attack pattern.
  • Tab: Cycle through all units (enemies and player).
  • Shift + Tab: Cycle in the reverse direction.
  • Number Keys (1-4): Select corresponding abilities (4 is the default "walk" ability).

Current Abilities

  • Passive Abilities:
    • Slash: Attacks an enemy if you move while starting adjacent and ending adjacent to the enemy.
    • Thrust: Attacks an enemy when you move directly into them.
  • Ability 1 - Shield Bash:
    • Currently in an upgraded state for testing. Shoves back all enemies in a cone and also pushes back the player. Enemies shoved into obstacles or lava are killed.
  • Ability 2 - Leap:
    • Jump to a position two hexes away, leaping over obstacles.
  • Ability 3 - Placeholder Stab:
    • Simply attacks an adjacent selected enemy. (The icon is a placeholder, representing a future bomb throw ability).
  • Default Ability - Walk:
    • Move one hex.

Levels and Progression

  • Procedurally Generated Levels: Each level is created using a seed value and progressively increases in difficulty, currently maxing out at level 10.
  • Future Updates: Planned additions include:
    • Environmental decorations like cave walls, improved lighting, and physics-based debris.
    • Rogue-lite ability advancement between levels.
    • Boss battles at the end of certain levels (12-16).
    • Multiple biomes (e.g., forest, desert, snow, swamp) with unique enemies and bosses.
    • A light narrative thread centered on the "Hexed Haven."
    • Additional playable characters with different playstyles/abilities.
    • Copyable and editable game seeds.
    • More input options and configurable settings.

What's Next?

I'm planning an initial release on Steam, with other platforms to follow as development progresses.
